Spirit Repeat as SAC Champs with 40-6 win at Panhandle

GOODWELL, Okla. – For the second straight season – and third time in four years – the 20th-ranked OUAZ football team is champions of the Sooner Athletic Conference after a 40-6 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday afternoon.

OUAZ (7-2, 7-2 SAC) led 33-0 at halftime after scoring on all six of its first half possessions while adding a blocked field goal return for a touchdown. Panhandle State (4-6, 4-5) scored its only points early in the third quarter before the Spirit capped the day's scoring with a final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Kristopher Ewens scored the three offensive touchdowns for the Spirit, including a 4-yard rush for the game's first touchdown. Ewens then had a 15-yard receiving touchdown in the second quarter before a 1-yard rush for the fourth quarter points.

When Ewens wasn't carrying the ball into the end zone, Landon Reeves put points on the board with field goals. Reeves had a pair of 40-yard field goals and additional makes of 25 and 38 yards. Reeves also converted all four of his PAT chances to score 16 points in the game to set the program record for field goals and kicking points in a single game.

Towards the end of the second quarter, Khalil Lewis blocked a 24-yard field goal attempt by the Aggies that was caught and returned 80 yards for a score by Eric Holman.

OUAZ finished with 273 yards of offense and 18 first downs. They rushed for 180 yards while converting 5 of 17 on third down. The defense held OPSU to 227 yards with negative-14 rushing yards and only 1 of 16 on third down.

Marcelous Chester-Riley finished with 97 rushing yards on 19 carries, with Ewens gaining 22 yards on nine carries. Terrell Littlejohn led the receivers with three catches for 40 yards.

Brandon Tomerlin Jr. led the defense with seven tackles, three tackles-for-loss, and two of the team's six sacks. Lewis added six tackles, two forced fumbles, and two blocked kicks. Deangelo Jackson picked up a pair of sacks, and Lamar Johnson had an interception.

OUAZ must now wait to see if they have another game based on where the final rankings have the teams from the SAC when the poll and 16-team field for the NAIA Football Championship Series is announced on Sunday at 5 p.m. AZT.
