Slow Start Leads to Home Loss

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Looking for wins on consecutive nights, the OUAZ women's basketball team got off to a slow start against Benedictine Mesa on Friday, leading to a 76-69 loss at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (1-2) scored the first four points of the game before Benedictine Mesa (1-0) went on a 14-1 run that led to a 20-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. The deficit eventually reached 14 in the second quarter before the Spirit began to chip away.

Twice the Spirit battled back to tie the game, and twice, the Redhawks countered with scoring runs to take control. The decisive run saw the visitors score 14 of 18 points to turn a 55-55 tie into a 69-59 lead with 2:55 to play.

OUAZ overcame its 34.7 percent shooting by grabbing 20 offensive rebounds and scoring 37 points from the 33 BenU turnovers. It wouldn't be enough, as the Redhawks shot 51.8 percent overall and 46.7 percent from three.

Melissa Simmons led three OUAZ players in double figures with 15 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Landyn Lovelady scored 14 points, and Tiana Sledge added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Spirit will be back in action on Monday when they host Embry-Riddle at 6 p.m. in Faith Arena.
