Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Spirit Go Wire-to-Wire to Avenge Loss to Embry

SURPRISE, Ariz. – With the memory of a 33-point loss to Embry-Riddle just six days ago still fresh, the OUAZ women's basketball team put together one of the best performances in program history and defeated the Eagles 68-60 on Monday night at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (2-2) never trailed after scoring the first 13 points of the game. The lead reached its largest at 38-21 in the final second of the first half. Embry-Riddle (3-1) mounted a comeback in the third quarter, and with 4:54 to play in the fourth, the Eagles had the deficit down to 54-52.

Tiana Sledge sparked a 10-3 Spirit run that proved to be the decisive stretch with an offensive rebound and putback on the next trip down the floor. She scored six of her game-high 22 points during the run, including another layup with just under one minute to play.

The Spirit used 30 points in the paint to help them shoot 40.7 percent from the floor. They also pushed the tempo with 15 fast break points while forcing 19 turnovers.

Sledge scored her total on 9 of 14 shooting while adding 13 rebounds for her third straight double-double. Melissa Simmons added 12 points, and Landyn Lovelady had 11 with a team-high five assists. Marlee Johnson grabbed 14 rebounds with eight points.

Along with forcing those ERAU turnovers, the Spirit held the Eagles to 36.1 percent shooting and 7 of 22 from beyond the arc. OUAZ had a 41-39 edge on the boards while assisting on 15 of their 24 made baskets.

Embry was led by 15 points from both Zakiirah King and Ella Schott.

OUAZ will go for a season sweep of SAGU American Indian College on Thursday when they play the Warriors at 5 p.m. in Phoenix.
