Solid Second Half Propels Spirit to Season’s First Win

SURPRISE, Ariz. – In the first of three home games in five days, the OUAZ women's basketball team defeated SAGU American Indian College 81-66 on Thursday night for its first win of the season.

OUAZ (1-1) used an 8-0 run to close the first half to help them take a 40-38 lead into the break. The Spirit then outscored SAGU (0-3) 26-18 in the third quarter, followed by the first eight points of the fourth to build a 74-56 lead that was never threatened.

During the decisive third quarter, OUAZ made 12 of 23 shots to help them end the game at 36.0 percent from the field. In building a 65-41 edge on the boards, the Spirit collected 33 offensive rebounds, which resulted in 29 second-chance points. They also scored 33 points from 27 SAGU turnovers.

Marlee Johnson led the way for the Spirit with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. Johnson scored 12 points in the second half and finished the game 9 of 16 shooting.

Tiana Sledge also posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds while adding six steals. Landy Lovelady added 13 points, and Tatiana Gary scored 11. Cierra Kiser finished with eight points, nine rebounds, six steals, and three assists.

The Spirit totaled 19 steals and 13 assists while holding the Warriors to 33.9 percent shooting.

Christin Bahe led SAGU with 20 points.

OUAZ is back in action on Friday when they host Benedictine Mesa at 6 p.m.
