Spirit Dominate Second Half to Rally Past Redhawks

SURPRISE, Ariz. – After struggling through a first half that had them down 17 at the break, the OUAZ women's basketball team dominated the second half and rallied for a 68-63 win on Monday night at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (5-3) scored just 23 points in the first half and then scored 23 in the third quarter, yet despite the scoring, they still trailed Benedictine Mesa (1-1) 57-46 entering the final quarter. In those final 10 minutes, the Spirit outscored the Redhawks 22-6. They scored the first 10 points of the quarter and then took the lead on a Tiana Sledge layup with 3:05 to play.

BenU would twice get within one in the final two minutes, but the Spirit converted enough free throws while holding the Redhawks to just three fourth-quarter baskets to complete the comeback.

The Spirit had just three baskets in the first quarter, and that halftime deficit was the largest of the game. The 17-point comeback is the largest in program history.

Tatiana Gary led the Spirit with 15 points after converting all 10 of her free throw attempts. Sledge finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, and three blocked shots. Marlee Johnson and Melissa Simmons added 10 points apiece.

OUAZ held a 57-49 edge in rebounds with 12 points from 20 offensive rebounds. They also scored 19 points from the 18 BenU turnovers.

Elise Young had 34 points – including 23 in the first half to match OUAZ – to lead the Redhawks.

The Spirit will now head to California, where they will open GSAC play this week with two games. The first is on Thursday at The Master's.
