Two Second Half Goals Put Spirit Into Championship Game

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Using a pair of goals in the final 30 minutes of action, the OUAZ women's soccer team defeated Menlo 2-1 in the semifinals of the GSAC Women's Soccer Tournament at Thorrington Field.

OUAZ (12-3-2) was trailing 1-0 after confusion in the defensive end led to an own goal when a clearing attempt deflected off the Spirit defender and into the goal.

Menlo (8-5-3) maintained that advantage until the 65th minute when Paige Murray-Hernandez drew a foul in the penalty area. Cassidi Calzaretta stepped up and converted the ensuing penalty kick to level the game at 1-1.

In the 83rd minute, Murray-Hernandez drew another foul just outside the area to give the Spirit a free kick. Anabella Bara struck a low shot through the box and inside the far post for what turned into the game-winner.

OUAZ had controlled the game throughout with a 25-5 edge in shots. They put 12 of those attempts on goal while also taking 10 corner kicks.

Calzaretta led the team with five shots, and she and Bara had three shots on goal apiece. Akela Patterson picked up the win in goal with two saves.

The Spirit will face Westmont in the tournament championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. AZT. When they met in the regular season, the teams played to a 3-3 draw.
