OUAZ Falls to Westmont 2-1 in GSAC Final

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Two first half goals proved enough for No. 15 Westmont to hold off OUAZ and win the GSAC Women's Soccer Tournament title on Saturday afternoon at Thorrington Field.

OUAZ (12-4-2) fell behind in the 27th minute when Reese Davidson scored with an excellent strike from outside the penalty area to cap a build-up that had Westmont (14-0-3) threatening for a few minutes.

That momentum carried for another six minutes and led to a goal from Daisy Alvarez in the 32nd minute that gave the host Warriors a 2-0 advantage they took into the halftime break.

The Spirit came out strong to start the second half as they tried to rally in looking for their first conference title. That pressure led to a goal from Paige Murray-Hernandez in the 55th minute when she slid a shot in traffic past the Westmont keeper for her fifth goal of the season.

The goal would be the final shot on target by the Spirit as Westmont reestablished possession for the rest of the game and limited scoring chances. The last chance for the Spirit was a corner kick in the 89th minute that Westmont cleared and ran out the clock for their third straight GSAC Tournament crown.

Westmont finished with a 20-10 edge in total shots, with OUAZ putting only four of their attempts on goal.

Akela Patterson kept the Spirit in the game with nine saves.

OUAZ will now wait to see if they earn an at-large invite to the NAIA National Championship when the 40-team field is announced on Monday at 10 a.m.
