Season Opens with Road Loss at Embry

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The new OUAZ women's basketball season began with a 90-57 loss at Embry-Riddle on Tuesday night at Eagle Gym.

OUAZ (0-1) shot 31.1 percent from the field and made just 2 of 15 from beyond the arc in the opener. Embry-Riddle (2-0) countered with eight 3-pointers and 47.4 percent shooting while outscoring the Spirit in the paint 32-22.

After OUAZ held an early 4-2 lead, the Eagles went on an 8-1 run to take a lead they never gave back. Embry kept the advantage in double figures from the 4:01 mark of the second quarter through the rest of the game.

Each team struggled with turnovers, with the Spirit committing 26 and the Eagles 23. A key was that Embry scored 26 points from turnovers while OUAZ had just five.

Cierra Kiser scored 11 points off the bench to lead the Spirit. Tiana Sledge had 10 points and a team-high six rebounds in her OUAZ debut.

Embry had four players score double figures, with Ella Schott's 18 leading the way.

OUAZ has a quick turnaround before returning to action on Thursday when they host SAGU American Indian College in Faith Arena at 6 p.m.
