No. 14 Spirit Handle Steers, 56-0

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Things were clicking on all cylinders for the 14th-ranked OUAZ football team on Saturday as they dominated Texas College 56-0 on Orange Crush night at Spirit Field.

OUAZ (5-1, 5-1 Sooner) recorded 631 yards of total offense, and they posted its second shutout of the season after entering the year, having never had a shutout in the program's history. The Spirit forced three Texas College (0-5, 0-4) turnovers and seven punts with five three-and-outs.

Isaiah Randalle threw two of his three touchdown passes in the first quarter. The first was a 7-yard scoring pass to Marcelous Chester-Riley and then a 29-yard strike to Donovahn Jones. Chester-Riley added a rushing touchdown in the second quarter before Carter Freedland connected on a 53-yard TD pass to Devone Humphrey to put the Spirit in front 28-0 at halftime.

The second half saw Randalle connect with CJ Sullivan and then three straight rushing scores from Jh'dhan Lester, Tyerell Sturges-Cofer, and Jonathan Borquez Jr.

When all things settled, OUAZ threw for 419 yards using three different quarterbacks. Randalle accounted for 241 passing yards while completing a program-record 83.3 percent of his 24 attempts. He started by completing 15 of his first 16, including a run of eight straight.

Freedland completed 10 of 13 passes for 146 yards, and Michael Bird completed both of his attempts for 32 yards. Humphrey, Jones, and Chester-Riley had six catches apiece to lead the 10 different players with a grab. Humphrey went for 114 yards, while Jones accounted for 112 yards.

The Spirit picked up another 212 yards rushing at an average of 6.4 yards per attempt. Lester led the team with 59 yards rushing, with Sturges-Cofer running for 54 and Freedland gaining 51.

OUAZ tallied 29 first downs and went 4 of 9 on third down with 31 minutes and eight seconds of possession. They averaged 8.8 yards per play to help overcome 15 penalties for 139 yards.

With the offense rolling, the Spirit defense held the Steers in check with just 176 total yards at 2.6 yards per play. OUAZ held the visitors to 49 yards rushing, and the 127 passing yards came at an average of 2.7 yards per attempt.

Texas College twice worked its way into the red zone, only to see the Spirit record an interception on the first trip and force a turnover on downs the second time. The Steers went 2 of 15 on third down and had no conversions on four fourth-down attempts. The Spirit defense recorded eight tackles-for-loss and two sacks.

Brandon Tomerlin Jr. led the Spirit with 10 tackles while adding a forced fumble and pass breakup. Seth Ham added six tackles and joined David Sow on a sack. Giovonni White had the other sack, and Ryan Payne had two breakups while forcing and recovering a fumble.

OUAZ will have next week off before traveling to face Langston on October 22 in Oklahoma.
