Road Success Continues with 3-1 win at Hope International

IRVINE, Calif. – Road games have been good for the OUAZ women's soccer team this season, and that continued on Thursday as the Spirit defeated Hope International 3-1 in GSAC play at the OC Great Park.

OUAZ (8-2-1, 2-0-1 GSAC) improved to 5-0 on the road with the win. They wasted little time taking the lead on Thursday as Saipress Jones headed a corner kick from McKenna Payne to the keeper's left for her eighth goal of the season on the first shot of the game in the fourth minute.

Anabella Bara gave the Spirit a 2-0 lead in the 22nd minute when her shot from just outside the penalty box deflected off the hand of the keeper and into the goal for her fourth of the season. Cassidi Calzaretta created the chance by drawing two defenders before a small cross to Bara for the open shot.

Hope International (7-4-1, 1-2-0) cut the lead in half when Sarah Ralston scored it right in after taking a pass from Ryley Candelario in the 27th minute.

The score held until the 70th minute when Calzaretta capped the scoring by converting a penalty kick for the second straight game. The opportunity came after Haley Howard was taken down in the box by a pair of Hope defenders as she tried to play a ball played into the area.

Hope continued to attack and had the final five shots of the game, but the Royals could not find another goal. That late effort led to Hope holding a 15-10 advantage in total shots, but the Spirit led with six shots on goal to the four of the Royals.

Now atop the GSAC standings with seven points, the Spirit will return to action on October 13 when they host San Diego Christian at Spirit Field.
