Spirit Close Regular Season with 5-1 Win at ACU

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's soccer team moved closer to a bye in the first round of the GSAC Tournament by securing a 5-1 win at Arizona Christian on Friday night.

OUAZ ends its regular season at 11-3-2 overall and with 17 points in conference play behind a 5-1-2 record. The Spirit will finish second in the table and a bye into the tournament's semifinals with a Menlo tie or loss at Westmont on Saturday.

The Spirit took control of Friday's game by scoring three goals in just over two minutes in the first half. Paige Murray-Hernandez started the scoring with a shot off the left post and into the goal in the 27th minute. Just over 60 seconds later, Haley Howard chipped a shot over the keeper and off the same post before going into the goal for a 2-0 lead.

Anabella Bara would make it 3-0 in the 30th minute when she carried the ball to the top of the penalty area for a shot across the box and into the top corner of the goal.

Arizona Christian (4-9-2, 2-5-1 GSAC) got on the board in the closing minutes of the first half when Isabelle Cruz scored on a bending free kick from 30 yards out.

OUAZ got the goal they allowed back in the 65th minute when Murray-Hernandez collected a cross from Howard near the goal line for an open shot on net. Cassidi Calzaretta capped the scoring in the 72nd minute when a cross from Lexy Hayes found its way to Calzaretta on a back-post run for a tap-in goal.

OUAZ finished the night with 19 shots – including 15 in the first half – and they managed 10 of them on goal. They limited the Firestorm to seven shots with only two on target.

Akela Patterson picked up the win in goal playing the first half. Chloe Gutierrez closed out the game with a clean second half, and one save.

The Spirit will now wait for Saturday's results to learn their fate for the GSAC Tournament. They will open play on November 10 in Santa Barbara if they earn the bye. If Menlo defeats Westmont, the Spirit will host a quarterfinal game at Spirit Field on November 5.
