Spirit Bounce Back to Upset No. 21 Vanguard

SANTA ANA, Calif. – One day after one of its worst performances of the season, the OUAZ women's volleyball team turned the page and upset No. 21 Vanguard in four sets on Saturday afternoon.

Needing a win to help its chances of qualifying for next month's GSAC Tournament, OUAZ (13-11, 8-7 GSAC) came through with a 25-20, 28-26, 11-25, 25-21 road win. The Spirit picked up the win despite Vanguard (19-9, 9-5) having a 51-46 edge in kills and hitting .136 to the .086 of the Spirit.

OUAZ set the tone for the match early with 15 kills on .325 hitting in winning the first set. They followed that by turning around an early deficit in set two and taking a 2-0 lead. After the Lions easily won the third set and seemed to have the momentum, the Spirit scored four of the final five points of set four to earn the win.

Livia De Pra led three OUAZ players in double figures with 11 kills, while Rylie Henige and Payton Treadwell added 10 kills apiece. Madison Wampler provided the spark that was missing on Friday with nine kills.

OUAZ used a 6-3 advantage in service aces to help in the upset. Dayana Raygoza had a pair of those aces to lead the way. The Spirit also had four players in double figures in digs, with Kenzie Kuxhaus finishing with a match-high 17.

The Spirit has three matches remaining in the regular season, starting on Friday when they host Menlo in Faith Arena at 6 p.m.
