Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Spirit Concede Late in 1-1 Draw at Menlo

ATHERTON, Calif. – With a chance to secure a top-two finish in the final GSAC standings, the OUAZ women's soccer team surrendered a goal in the 86th minute and had to settle with a 1-1 draw at Menlo on Saturday afternoon.

OUAZ (10-3-2, 4-1-2 GSAC) scored its goal in the fifth minute when McKenna Payne took a headed pass from Saipress Jones and put a shot past the opposing keeper for the early advantage.

The Spirit had the better chances the rest of the game and held Menlo (7-3-2, 4-1-1) to only two shots on goal, but that final attempt was a goal from Angelica Soto on a corner kick in the 86th minute to equalize the game.

The game ended with OUAZ taking 17 shots and putting eight of them on goal. Cassidi Calzaretta led the Spirit with five shots and three on target.

Akela Patterson made one save in goal for the Spirit.

OUAZ remains one point clear of Menlo in the GSAC table with one week to play. The Spirit needs a win at Arizona Christian on Friday and a loss by Menlo in one of its final two games to secure a bye into the last four of the conference tournament.
