Spirit Secure Three Points in Defeating Vanguard

SURPRISE, Ariz. – It took an extra day, but the OUAZ women's soccer bounced back from its disappointing result on Thursday to defeat Vanguard 2-1 on Sunday morning at Spirit Field.

OUAZ (9-3-1, 3-1-1 GSAC) picked up a critical three points toward the team finishing in the top two of the GSAC standings at the end of the year. The Spirit ended the week tied atop the GSAC table with 10 points.

Vanguard (7-4-2, 3-2) took the 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when Madelyn Diaz redirected the ball that Rachel Penick played in on a corner kick play.

The Spirit pulled even at 1-1 in the 19th minute when Grace Green got on the end of a corner kick played by Andrea Ibarra. Green slid her shot into the goal on a first touch from deep in the penalty area.

Mindy Lertzman tallied the eventual game-winner in the 32nd minute with a chip to the keeper's right in a breakaway situation. She was alone with the keeper following a stellar back-pass from Paige Murray-Hernandez after she drew three defenders.

Each team took nine shots in the game, with the two Spirit goals their only shots on goal. Vanguard attempted five shots in the second half and finished with four shots on goal.

Akela Patterson picked up her first win in goal by making three saves for the Spirit.

With three games remaining in the regular season, OUAZ will head to northern California next week for two games. That trip begins on Thursday in Rocklin against William Jessup.
