Spirit Earn Split with No. 2 College of Idaho on Opening Day

SURPRISE, Ariz. – A new season of OUAZ softball began on Friday with the Spirit splitting a doubleheader against No. 2 College of Idaho at Willow Canyon High School. OUAZ picked up a 7-2 win in the opener, with College of Idaho taking the second game, 7-5.

GAME 1
Alexandra McCutcheon (1-0) threw a complete game to start the day and help the Spirit win its first-ever game over a top-five ranked opponent while giving head coach Ernesto Ortiz his first career victory. McCutcheon allowed just a pair of runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts in posting her 12th career complete game.

Breanna Gonzalez ignited the Spirit offense with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning that tied the game at 2-2. OUAZ scored five times in the bottom of the third inning, starting with a bases-loaded walk from Heliana Bueno. Jaymie Moore and Madison Collis followed with two-run doubles to give McCutcheon all the support she needed.

Gonzalez finished with a pair of hits to lead the Spirit's seven-hit effort. Bueno also had a double, and she scored a pair of runs.

GAME 2
College of Idaho scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first and then added three runs in the third and two more in the fifth. OUAZ got one run back in the bottom of the second on a single from Bueno. Samantha Miller then homered to left in the bottom of the third.

Trailing 7-4 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Spirit got an RBI single from Rachel Stockseth with two outs. Bueno then walked to load the bases before Briana Tucker got underneath a pitch and flew out to center to end the game.

Miller recorded three hits in the game, finishing a triple shy of the cycle and driving in two runs. Stockseth added two hits and a stolen base. The Spirit had 10 hits as a team.

Phoebe Popplewell (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) in three innings. Cori Turner allowed two runs in 1.1 innings, with McCutcheon pitching a scoreless 2.2 to end the game.
