Spirit Open Season with Pair of Sweeps at NCCAA Nationals

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The first day of the 2022 NCCAA National Invitational saw the OUAZ men's volleyball team sweep its way to a pair of victories to keep its shot at a second national championship alive. OUAZ (2-0) defeated both Geneva and Central Christian in three sets to finish as one of two undefeated teams after the first day of action.

Entering the tournament as the No. 1 seed, OUAZ quickly swept through Geneva by scores of 25-15, 25-17, 25-10. The Spirit hit .366 in the match – including .600 in the third set – with 38 kills. They also tallied nine service aces.

Emery Outin led the team with 10 kills on .529 hitting. Brenden Hardt added seven kills and five blocks.

OUAZ held Geneva (1-4) to 21 kills and .000 hitting with 10 blocks and 25 digs.

In the nightcap against Central Christian, OUAZ again used a steady offensive attack and solid defense to earn the 25-17, 25-14, 25-18 win. The Spirit held a 36-13 advantage in kills while hitting .299 and holding the Tigers to negative-.059.

Hardt had a match-high 10 kills, with Matt Beard adding seven. Chase Marcy recorded six of the Spirit's 11 service aces.

The Spirit will play another two matches on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. (AZ) against Maranatha Baptist. A win in that match would guarantee the Spirit win the title by defeating Trinity Christian in their final match at 1:30 p.m. (AZ).
