Spirit Show Grit in Loss at No. 5 Westmont

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The OUAZ women's basketball team opened the most challenging road trip the GSAC has to offer with a gritty performance despite falling at No. 5 Westmont 74-56 on Thursday evening at Murchison Gymnasium.

OUAZ (5-12, 2-8 GSAC) led after the first quarter and outscored Westmont (15-3, 8-2) in the third quarter before the Warriors pulled away late. The Spirit shot 42.3 percent from the field, including making 7 of 11 shots in the third quarter.

The defensive end kept the Spirit in the game as they held the home squad to 40 percent shooting and just 2 of 11 from beyond the arc. It was the second-lowest shooting percentage by the Warriors at home this season and their worst from three.

Turnovers were the main difference in the outcome as OUAZ committed 22, resulting in 30 Westmont points. In turn, the Spirit only scored four points from the five turnovers they forced.

Makayla Holthaus led the Spirit with 12 points and seven rebounds. Sedona Anderson added 11 points with three makes from deep. OUAZ got 23 points off the bench, including eight from Jayla Jones.

Destiny Okonkwo led Westmont with 24 points and 10 boards.

OUAZ now heads to Santa Clarita, where they will face No. 4 The Master's on Saturday at 1 p.m. (AZ).
