Spirit Continue Streak with Win at ACU

GLENDALE, Ariz. – It took a set to get things started, but the OUAZ women's volleyball team quickly turned things around and opened Golden State Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 win over Arizona Christian on Wednesday night at the Firestorm Recreation Center.

After dropping the first set 25-22, OUAZ (7-0, 1-0 GSAC) stormed back to win the next three 25-21, 25-19, 25-11. The win marked the second consecutive season the Spirit has started conference play with a win.

OUAZ was able to keep the first set tight behind 15 kills, but their seven hitting errors and allowed Arizona Christian (6-1, 0-1) to pull it out late. The Spirit offense picked it up after that with only 11 errors the rest of the match to finish the night with 53 kills on .259 hitting.

With the offense clicking, the Spirit defense was putting pressure on the host Firestorm. ACU committed 20 of its 24 hitting errors in the final three sets and ended the match with just 40 kills and hitting .121.

Five OUAZ players totaled at least five kills in the win, with Kate Pestova leading the way with 14 kills. Livia De Pra added 12 kills and 17 digs for her first double-double of the season. Avie Butsko posted nine kills on .450 hitting.

The Spirit would also notch a 9-5 edge in service aces. Cristal Carrizoza had five of the Spirit's total aces to go with 38 assists and seven kills.

Kahea A'ea gave OUAZ 16 digs, with Valentina Trovato picking up 12. The Spirit finished with 59 digs as a team. They also had five blocks, with three from Butsko.

Krysta Petersen led ACU with 14 kills.

OUAZ will put its winning streak on the line at home on Friday, where they play a pair of nationally-ranked teams at the OUAZ Triangular. The Spirit will host No. 12 Bellevue at 3:30 p.m. and then No. 10 Providence at 6 p.m. in Faith Arena.
