Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Spirit Upset No. 12 Bellevue; Fall to No. 10 Providence

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's volleyball team took a step forward in the program's growth on Friday in splitting pair of matches against nationally-ranked opponents. OUAZ (8-1) started the day by rallying for a 3-2 win over 12th-ranked Bellevue before 10th-ranked Providence took the day's final match.

The Spirit was sluggish to get the day going and trailed 2-0 against Bellevue (7-1) before coming all the way back to win the match 18-25, 13-25, 25-19, 25-16, 19-17 for the program's first-ever win over a ranked opponent.

The offense turned things around to complete the comeback as they recorded 42 kills against just five hitting errors over the final three sets. That helped the Spirit to 61 total kills on .241 hitting.

Livia De Pra led the way for the Spirit with 19 kills while adding 14 digs for her second straight double-double. Kate Pestova added 14 kills and three service aces, including two in the final set. The duo combined to post seven of the Spirit's ten kills in the decisive set.

OUAZ was able to hold Bellevue to .201, hitting with five blocks and 85 digs. Cristal Carrizoza had 19 digs and 43 assists, while Valentina Trovato had 14 digs.

Just 40 minutes after pulling off the comeback upset, OUAZ was back on the court looking to complete another upset. They had a 2-1 lead before Providence (8-2) rallied back to earn the 25-27, 25-18, 20-25, 25-16, 15-13, and snap the Spirit's program-record winning streak.

The momentum of the Bellevue win carried into the first set as OUAZ recorded 19 kills on .228 hitting in the set. They couldn't keep that going as they only had more than ten kills in a set just once the rest of the night. The Argonauts would block the Spirit 15 times, holding them to .123 hitting to overcome OUAZ's 62-59 edge in kills.

Pestova led the Spirit with 18 kills, but she totaled nine of those in the first set. Avie Butsko added 13 kills, with De Pra and Chelsea Taylor finishing with 12 kills each.

Carrizoza finished with 47 assists and four aces. Valentina Trovato posted 32 digs, with Kahea A'ea adding 17. The Spirit had 99 digs as a team.

OUAZ will have a few days to regroup from the season's first loss before jumping back into GSAC play when they host The Master's on Friday at 5 p.m. in Faith Arena.
