OUAZ Defeats Master’s in Four

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Coming off its first loss of the season, the 20th-ranked OUAZ women's volleyball team responded with a 3-1 win over The Master's in a Golden State Athletic Conference match on Friday night at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (9-1, 2-0 GSAC) was in control for most of the evening and came away with the 25-20, 25-16, 22-25, 25-20 victory. It was the second straight win in the series against The Master's (5-8, 1-2) after the Spirit lost the first five meetings.

The Spirit offense set the one early with 13 kills and .393 hitting in the first set. While they ended the night with 48 kills, the percentage dropped in each set, and OUAZ ended the match hitting .234. The Mustangs would record 41 kills on .108 hitting.

Kate Pestova led the Spirit with 14 kills, with Avie Butsko adding 11 on a .364 hitting night.  The duo were the only two Spirit players in double figures, while Livia De Pra, Chelsea Taylor, and Brooklyn Rainer each tallied six kills.

De Pra and Eve Rodriguez had 11 digs apiece to lead the Spirit to a 54-47 advantage in total digs. Taylor led the Spirit with five blocks. Cristal Carrizoza added six service aces to her 34 assists, five kills, and five digs.

The Mustangs would use their 10-8 edge in blocks to force the match to a fourth set.

Emily Clark led TMU with 13 kills.

OUAZ will be back in action on Saturday when they host No. 25 Westmont at 1 p.m.
