No. 20 Spirit Show Growth with Five-Set Win over No. 25 Westmont

SURPRISE, Ariz. – In the first-ever match between ranked opponents involving OUAZ, the 20th-ranked Spirit rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat No. 25 Westmont on Saturday afternoon at Faith Arena.

Earning the 33-31, 19-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-13 win took everything that OUAZ (10-1, 3-0 GSAC) had. They fought off five set points to win the first set and then held off a Westmont (9-6, 3-1) rally in the fourth set to get to a deciding set.

The Spirit were rolling to a win in the fifth when the Warriors scored six straight points to from down 14-7 to just 14-13. Kate Pestova would make sure OUAZ didn't give it all back with a match-winning kill on the next rally.

That kill gave the GSAC kills leader 22 in the win for her fourth 20-kill performance of the season. While she hit just .134 to get the total, Pestova also delivered 21 digs and four blocks. It was the second 20 kills, 20 digs performance of her career.

OUAZ finished the match with a 62-61 edge in kills while hitting .111. Westmont would hit .136 with a 9-7 advantage in service aces and 13 blocks to the 11 from the Spirit.

Brooklyn Rainer and Avie Butsko had 11 kills apiece for the Spirit with Livia De Pra adding 10. The 11 kills from Rainer matched her career high. Butsko would add three blocks and De Pra had 19 digs.

Cristal Carrizoza was key for OUAZ with 54 assists, 22 digs, two aces, and three blocks. She became the first player in program history with 50-plus assists and 20-plus digs in a single match.

Lexi Malone led Westmont with 17 kills on .484 hitting.

The win leaves the Spirit as the lone unbeaten team in GSAC play this season. OUAZ will now head for northern California where they will play at Menlo on Friday at 5 p.m.
