Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Spirit's Second Half Outburst Leads to Large Win

SURPRISE, ARIZ. – On September 1, the OUAZ women's soccer team was leading Benedictine-Mesa 2-0, and seemed to be on its way to a third goal before a monsoon storm washed out the contest. The Spirit got its chance to finish the job at home on Friday night, but it took them about a half to get started.

After the RedHawks took an early 1-0 lead, the Spirit rattled off the game's other five goals en route to a large non-conference victory. Five different players scored for OUAZ, which saw the Spirit score four of those in its second-half onslaught.

The Spirit trailed most of the first half, but Mindy Lertzman finally put OUAZ on the board in the 42', equalizing the game before half. OUAZ came out with a plan in the second half, scoring two goals in 2:30 to take a 3-1 lead in the 49'.

Kendall Caron added a strike in the 67' on an excellent rising free kick that found its way just under the bar. While the Spirit closed out the rest of the match, Saipress Jones added one more goal with 56 seconds remaining to secure the Spirit's second-largest margin of victory this season.

Paige Murray-Hernandez finished the night with a goal and an assist, starting her night with a helper on Lertzman's first half goal. She then scored one of her own in the 49' to push OUAZ's momentum into overdrive thanks to a brilliant pass from Jody Hernandez.

The Spirit had opportunities all night long, finishing the match with 19 shots, and 12 on target. Chloe Gutierrez came in to start the second half and made six key saves to pick up her third win of the season.

OUAZ will have seven days off before stepping on the pitch, again facing off with another in-state CalPac foe. The Spirit will travel to Prescott, Ariz. to face Embry-Riddle next Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
