Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Spirit Wrap Up Cali Sweep with Shutout Victory

The OUAZ women's soccer team finished their short stay in California with a 4-0 win over Westcliff on Monday afternoon, coming back to Arizona with a two-game sweep. The Spirit outscored its opponents 7-0 over the last two games, and have not allowed a goal in three consecutive games.

After starting the season helping her teammates score, forward Haley Howard got a goal of her own to get the scoring started Monday in the 26'. Just under ten minutes later, Jody Hernandez scored her first goal in an OUAZ uniform following an excellent feed from Cassidi Calzaretta.

Midway through the second half, the Spirit found a pair of insurance goals off the foot of sophomore Mindy Lertzman. In the 64', Lertzman picked the right corner with a great shot from the top of the 18-yard box, then hit a similarly impressive shot to the left side of the net in the 67'.

OUAZ was aggressive early and often, taking 21 shots and getting seven of those on target. Chloe Gutierrez and Carli Calzaretta made five total saves for the second combined shutout for the season.

The Spirit return home for another non-conference match, a make-up game with Benedictine-Mesa after the September 1 game in Mesa was rained out. Kickoff from Spirit Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday night.
