Two Goals in 30 Seconds Propels Spirit to Shutout Victory

The OUAZ women's soccer team earned its first shutout of the season Saturday night, defeating Marymount California 3-0 in the first game of the road trip.

The Spirit got out to a fast start yet again, scoring twice in the 14'. Cassidi Calzaretta scored her sixth goal of the season to start the night, then 30 seconds later Saipress Jones scored her fourth.

OUAZ would play a solid game the rest of the way, only adding to its lead in the 89'. Emily Lynch scored with 1:49 remaining to secure the Spirit's second-largest margin of victory this Fall.

The opportunities were plenty and often for OUAZ in the first half, as the Spirit took 11 shots and had a corner kick as well. The teams managed seven shots each in the second half, but OUAZ keeper Cassidy Samuelson stood strong all night. Samuelson made six saves on Saturday for her first career shutout.

Marymount got strong goalkeeping from Luz Lopez, as she gave the Mariners a chance all night long. Lopez finished the game with 11 saves.

The Spirit will look for the perfect road trip when they meet Westcliff Monday night. Kickoff from Irvine, Calif. is scheduled for 7 p.m.
