Spirit Sweep Park to Stay Perfect

GILBERT, Ariz. – The best start in program history continued on Tuesday as OUAZ picked up a 3-0 win over in-state rival Park Gilbert at the Arizona Region Volleyball Center.

In earning a 25-18, 25-14, 25-21 victory, the Spirit picked up their first-ever win over Park Gilbert (0-2) and moved to 4-0 overall this season. The current five-match winning streak that dates back to last season is the longest in program history.

OUAZ put together its most efficient attacking match of the young season by hitting .337 with 37 total kills. They jumped out to the early lead with 17 kills on .351 hitting in the opening set and then came back to hit .435 with ten kills and no errors in set two. The final frame saw the Spirit add another ten kills on .231 to close out the team's first sweep of the season.

It was a balanced attack from the Spirit with six different players recording at least four kills. While Kate Pestova led the way with 11 kills on .320 hitting, she got support from Avie Butsko with seven kills and Chelsea Taylor with six kills. Butsko and Taylor hit .583 and .556, respectively, with only one error between them.

The trio to Brooklyn Rainer, Livia De Pra, and Cristal Carrizoza each had four kills. Carrizoza added 25 assists and seven digs. De Pra tallied seven digs and two aces in her Spirit debut.

OUAZ was able to hold the Buccaneers to just 34 kills on .149 hitting. The home squad committed 19 hitting errors and didn't hit above .154 in any of the three sets. The Spirit helped slow the attack with 41 digs, and they added six aces.

Valentina Trovato paced the Spirit defense with 14 digs. Eve Rodriguez picked up a pair of aces.

Amanda Jonovich led Park with 11 kills.

This week, the Spirit has two more matches on tap – both at Faith Arena – with the first scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. against Benedictine Mesa. Tickets are available now at OUAZSpirit.com/tickets.
