OUAZ Uses Three Second-Half Goals to Capture Kellar's 100th NAIA Win

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - The OUAZ women's soccer team brought its excellent offensive execution home from Georgia, scoring three more goals in a 3-1 win over University of the Southwest (N.M.) on Thursday night. The victory marked the 100th NAIA career win for head coach Skelly Kellar, with 48 of those coming at OUAZ.

The Spirit had control from the opening kick, creating an excellent opportunity for themselves off the dot as the opening whistle sounded. It was a foreshadowing of what was to come all evening, as OUAZ held the bulk of the possession Thursday.

Despite having seven shots in the first half, the Spirit had to wait until the 50' to score, as Paige Murray-Hernandez broke through after an excellent pass from Haley Chitwood. The Mustangs' Priscilla Garcia scored just 16 second later to even the tilt, but that was the last excellent opportunity the Spirit allowed the rest of the game.

Cassidi Calzaretta scored her third of the season, and third in two games, in the 60' to break the tie on a similar play to Murray-Hernandez's goal. Reigning GSAC Player of the Year Saipress Jones notched her first of the season with a spectacular finish from ten yards out after an excellent cross from Haley Howard.

By the end of the evening, OUAZ finished with 22 shots, 15 of those on target. The Spirit had a barrage of chances in the second half, taking 15 of those 22 shots in the final frame. Jones had six of those shots, with four of the attempts making it on target.

Chloe Gutierrez made five saves to pick up her first win of the season. USW goalkeeper Kristina Simpson made 12 stops in a busy night during her team's season opener.

The Spirit will now have a week off before traveling to the East Valley for a visit with rival Benedictine-Mesa. Kickoff from Mesa, Ariz. is scheduled for 7 p.m. on September 1.
