Gutierrez Hangs Tough, Spirit Ultimately Fall in Season Opener

The OUAZ women's soccer season did not get off to the start it was hoping for, as the Spirit dropped the opening game of the fall 2021 campaign. Georgia Gwinnett scored a pair of second half goals to take a 2-0 victory on Wednesday evening.

The Grizzlies controlled the pace for most of the match, as they put up 12 shots to the Spirit's six. OUAZ goalkeeper Chloe Gutierrez performed well, especially early, as she finished the night with four saves.

GGU's scored twice in 22 minutes, first with Kyara Armenta putting one in the upper right corner from 15 yards out. Addie Adame then dished her second assist of the night when she Joy Mertzig in the middle of the field to double the Grizzlies' lead.

Ki'i Aweau led the way for the Spirit, posting two shots (one on target), and Emily Lynch also recorded a shot on target. Saipress Jones managed a shot in the contest as well.

The Spirit will have a chance to split the year-opening road trip when they head to Thomasville, Ga. on Friday. Kickoff against Thomas University is scheduled for 8am AZ time.
