Spirit Rally to Win Game One in Split on Day One of GSAC Championship Series

COSTA MESA, Calif. – The first day of the GSAC Baseball Championship Series saw the OUAZ baseball team earn a split of the two games against No. 9 Vanguard to set up a winner-take-all game three on Thursday morning. OUAZ won the opener 6-5 before dropping game two, 8-0.

It was an interesting start to the day for the Spirit as projected starter Gage Johnson was scratched moments before the first pitch. Matthew Wilmot was then the OUAZ starter and he gave the team 4.2 innings in which he allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits.

Down 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Travis Bailey came in with the bases loaded and two outs to record a strikeout to keep the deficit from growing. That seemed to ignite the Spirit offense as they responded with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.

OUAZ would then take the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh inning as Elijah Celaya, Tristan Thomas, and Nathan Tarver each drove in a run. Vanguard got a run back in the bottom of the seventh to make in 6-5.

The Lions got two on with one out in the bottom of the ninth when Anthony Quattrocchi came in and forced a double play to end the game and earn his first save of the season and secure the first postseason win in the program history.

In total, the Spirit bullpen of Cole Tidd, Bailey, Jeffrey Gehr, Tanner Fallon, and Quattrocchi combined to allow just one unearned run on two hits in 4.1 innings. Gehr was credited with the win with one inning of work.

OUAZ had only seven hits in the game – all singles – and nobody had more than one. Tarver had a pair of RBIs while Ben Lewis and Adrian Salazar each scored two runs.

The second game saw the Lions jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and never look back to even the series with the 8-0 victory. They held the Spirit to only five hits while posting 13 of their own.

OUAZ and Vanguard will play for the conference title and the automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round on Thursday in the decisive game three. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Dean Harvey Field on the Vanguard campus.
