Spirit Push Title Game to the Final Out

COSTA MESA, Calif. – For a team that continued to battle all season, the OUAZ baseball team gave one final push but came up one run short against No. 9 Vanguard in game three of the GSAC Championship Series on Thursday afternoon at Dean Harvey Field.

After Vanguard scored five times in the top of the second inning, OUAZ (21-23) got three back in the bottom of the inning behind RBI hits from Griffin Hagen, Kobie Tinsley, and Jared Crockett. Deon Reese would pick up an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning that pulled the Spirit within 5-4.

Vanguard would push its advantage to 8-4 with a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Neither team would score again until the bottom of the eighth inning when OUAZ added one run on a fielder's choice from Elijah Celaya and then a two-run home run from Adrian Salazar to make it 8-7 into the ninth inning.

The Lions scored an important insurance run in the top of the ninth before Donovan Snipes forced a groundout with runners on second and third to end the frame. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Kobie Tinsley singled to right field and then went to third on an error by the right fielder.

Crockett singled home Tinsley and then moved to second on a single from Celaya. Salazar then hit a bouncer to first and was beaten to the bag by a half-step to end the ballgame.

OUAZ finished the day with 16 hits as six guys recorded a multi-hit game. Hagen led the team with three hits while Crockett and Salazar each finished with two hits and two RBI.

Hayden Sandman started for the Spirit and allowed five runs in 1.2 innings. Tanner Fallon then gave the Spirit 4.0 innings where he allowed three runs on three hits. Travis Bailey recorded a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the sixth inning.

Jeffrey Gehr would provide OUAZ with 2.2 innings where he allowed one run on three hits before Anthony Quattrocchi and Snipes finished the ninth.

The result ends the season for the Spirit with a GSAC East Division title and the program's first appearance in the GSAC postseason.
