Series Opens with Doubleheader Split

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team used a pair of excellent pitching performances to record a split of a doubleheader against The Master's on Friday evening at Surprise Stadium. OUAZ took the 9-inning opener 6-0 before falling in the 7-inning nightcap 3-2.

With the day was complete, OUAZ holds an 18-17 overall record and the Spirit maintains a 3-game lead in the GSAC East Division with their 7-3 conference record.

Tanner Fallon (3-2) was the story of game one in winning his third consecutive decision. He went 7.2 innings and allowed just two hits with six strikeouts. He worked around a pair of walks and four hit batters to run his scoreless inning streak to 10.2 innings dating back to March 26.

Matthew Wilmot recorded the final four outs to complete the third shutout of the season by the OUAZ staff. He allowed just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.

And while Fallon was the headline in the mound, Nathan Tarver was the news at the plate. The freshman went 2 for 3 with a 3-run home run in the fifth inning and four RBIs in total. He would also draw a walk and score three runs.

Kobie Tinsley added three hits and one RBI, and the team recorded 10 hits in total.

Gage Johnson (6-1) was solid on the mound for the Spirit in game two in holding The Master's (23-15, 4-6 GSAC) to just three runs on eight hits in a complete game. Johnson tallied eight strikeouts in suffering his first loss of the season.

Tarver once again came through for the Spirit in game two, delivering a 2-run single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. OUAZ would leave the bases loaded later in the inning and then o down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

The Spirit and Mustangs will close out the season series on Saturday with another doubleheader. Game one is at 2 p.m. on the TX Rangers Field 3 with game two moving to KC Royals Field 6 about 40 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
