Big Plays Lead No. 23 OUAZ to Win in Home Finale

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Using three touchdowns of over 50 yards, the 23rd-rank OUAZ football team closed out its home schedule with a 37-7 win over Southwestern Assemblies of Gold University (SAGU) on Saturday afternoon at Spirit Field.

OUAZ (3-1, 3-1 SAC) got two of those long scores during a 17-0 first quarter. Shamar Moreland broke off a 59-yard run for the first of his two scores on the day with 2:06 to play in the quarter. Then, on the final play of the period, Austin McCullough found a streak Dranel Rhodes with no defenders in sight for a 72-yard score.

Less than 90 seconds later, De'Andre Armstrong returned an interception 68 yards to make it 24-0. Moreland added his second score from four yards out in the third quarter and Landon Reeves mixed in three field goals – tying the school record – to give him 13 points on the day.

The Spirit nearly had the first shutout in program history, but SAGU (3-3, 2-2) blocked a punt and gained possession at the OUAZ 3-yard line with 21 seconds remaining in the game. The Lions would get into the endzone two plays later for their only score.

OUAZ totaled 418 yards of offense with 332 of them coming from the passing game. McCullough completed 19 of 38 passes with one score and zero interception. Rhodes finished with 178 yards on four catches with Jonah Alicea making five receptions for 67 yards.

Moreland totaled 102 yards rushing on 14 carries to give him four straight games over 100 rushing yards.

The Spirit allowed SAGU 260 yards of offense and held the Lions to just eight yards in the third quarter. OUAZ forced three turnovers and held SAGU to only two conversions on 12 third-down attempts.

Brandon Tomerlin Jr. led the Spirit with eight tackles. Rylen Kaniaupio had six tackles and two tackles-for-loss. Christian Viville had one sack and two forced fumbles. Seth Ham had one sack and Jason Ternes and Jake Smith finished with 0.5 sacks each.

OUAZ will bring this abbreviated spring season to a conclusion next Saturday, April 10, when they face Langston at W.E. Anderson Stadium in Langston, Oklahoma.
