No. 22 Spirit Complete Season with 28-24 Win at Langston

LANGSTON, Okla. -  On a windy afternoon at W.E. Anderson Stadium, the 22nd-ranked OUAZ football team took advantage of the situation with 21 first-quarter points to help them to a 28-24 win at Langston on Saturday.

After Langston (2-3, 2-3 SAC) went down the field for a touchdown on the game's first drive, OUAZ (4-1, 4-1) scored 21 consecutive points – all in the first quarter – with the wind at their backs. They got a touchdown pass from Austin McCullough to Antonio Day and then a rushing score from Shamar Moreland for the first two scores.

OUAZ would then use timeouts to get the ball back while the wind was still on its side. That led to a pass from McCullough to Jonah Alicea for a third score with the wind advantage.

The Lions got one of the scores back with the wind on their side in the second quarter to cut the Spirit lead to 21-14 at intermission. McCullough would find Sam Mason for a touchdown early in the third quarter for the final score of the day for the Spirit.

Langston would get back within 28-24 and had the ball to the OUAZ 24-yard line with just over four minutes to play. Seth Ham then recorded his second sack of the day, forcing a fumble and a 16-yard loss. That led to a missed field goal and allowed OUAZ to run another two minutes off the clock.

Austin Bohn would pin Langston inside their 10-yard line on the ensuing Spirit punt and the defense kept the Lions at bay to secure a fourth straight win.

McCullough threw for 265 yards and the three touchdowns. He completed passes to 10 different receivers with Rhodes making a team-high five grabs for 100 yards. Moreland finished with 117 yards rushing for his fifth straight 100-yard rushing game.

David Jones Jr. led the Spirit defense with 13 tackles while Brandon Tomerlin Jr. added 11 tackles. Christian Viville had 1.5 sacks.

OUAZ is hopeful for an at-large invite to the NAIA Football Championship Series with the field being announced on Sunday afternoon.
