Spirit Onto GSAC Semis with 4-0 Win Over Jessup

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The OUAZ women's tennis team cruised to a quarterfinal victory on Tuesday morning, defeating William Jessup 4-0 to advance to the GSAC Tournament semifinal. It is the third consecutive dual win for the Spirit.

It was a fast start for the second-seed Spirit, taking the doubles point as Jessup did not have enough players for a third pair, and clinched by Giulia Leali and Veronica Gallardo's 6-2 victory. OUAZ also got a point in the six match, as the Warriors had five singles players.

Saskia Wells put OUAZ on the brink of clinching, as she posted a pair of 6-0 sets to defeat Ryanda Guerrero. Leali, who was named to the all-conference team earlier in the morning, clinched the trip to the semis with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Aysha Hayes.

The team played a little tense early, as noted by head coach Brad Louderback, but settled in and took control of the dual as the morning went on. For Leali, she focused on one thing at a time during the week's first competition.

"I think of playing point by point, and not overthinking," Leali said. "Basically playing my best, playing my game, seeing what the strengths of the opponent are, and not playing to her strengths."

The Spirit led both doubles matches 5-0 at one point before Jessup eventually grabbed a few points in both, and those were able to get past some of the early nerves OUAZ may have had heading into the conference tournament.

"There's a little bit of nerves involved," Louderback said, "so the doubles helped us get ready for the singles and then we came out firing in the singles. I'll give William Jessup a lot of credit, they fought hard, everyone down the line, and they did not make it easy for us at the end."

OUAZ will now face the third seed, Saint Katherine. It will be the first meeting between the two schools, and the Spirit will look to get into its first-ever conference tournament final.
