Spirit Fall in GSAC Semifinal

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The first trip to the GSAC semifinals for OUAZ women's tennis ended in defeat on Wednesday morning, as the Spirit fell 4-0 to Saint Katherine in at the Barnes Tennis Center. OUAZ has finished the season with a winning record for the first time in program history.

The Firebirds took the doubles point quickly, winning the twos match 6-0 and the threes match 6-0. Giulia Leali and Veronica Gallardo were leading 4-3 before the match was called due to the clinch for USK.

The Firebirds took three singles matches in straight sets, clinching before all six singles matches could finish. Leali took the first set of her match before it was called, and Saskia Wells was about to enter the third set before the clinch.

This season marked the largest turnaround in program history. The Spirit put together its best conference regular-season finish, and had the most postseason play it has ever participated in. Head coach Brad Louderback noted the two duals this week can help the young program heading into the future.

"We're taking away a lot of positive because the score didn't indicate the way the match ended up," Louderback said. "We were coming back in some matches. We have some young freshmen that are new to college tennis, new to this type of competition, so I think one of the best takeaways from this tournament is experience. We got some valuable experience and you can't put a price tag on experience. You got to live, and you got to get knocked down a few times and just keep getting back up."
