Spirit Claim GSAC East During Regular Season Doubleheader Finale

SURPRISE, ARIZ. – The OUAZ softball team needed just one win to clinch the GSAC East Championship, and they got it with a 4-0 win on Saturday afternoon. The Spirit took the seven-game series 4-1, though OUAZ and Arizona Christian played another conference came to close out the weekend.

The two teams stayed scoreless through the first two innings until the Spirit scored three in the third. Mashayla Beltran hit a two-run double down the left field line, before coming around to score on an Avery Bohn RBI single.

Alexandra McCutcheon put together her best performance to date, as she pitched the team's first shutout of the season. McCutcheon spread five hits and a walk over seven complete innings while striking out five and needing only 74 pitches to get her fifth win of the year.

The Spirit may have only had four hits, but they had plenty of baserunners all afternoon long. On top of the four hits, OUAZ put together three walks and had two hit batters. Kelly Stumper also had a double in the bottom of the fifth inning, as half of the Spirit's hits went for extra bases.

Arizona Christian 8, OUAZ 7

OUAZ jumped out to a big lead after five innings, as they took a 7-1 advantage in the final game of the regular season game. It was highlighted by a big fifth inning, as Janessa River hit a three-run double to give the Spirit its biggest lead of the afternoon.

The Firestorm began to chip away at the lead, as they scored two in the bottom of the fifth, and four in the bottom of the sixth. ACU eventually walked it off in the bottom of the eighth to complete the comeback.

Rivera had half of the team's RBI, with Stumper, Bohn and Andraya Rhinehart each getting one. OUAZ showed great patience at the plate in the second game of the day as well, with Spirit batters taking four walks along with six hits.

OUAZ will now await the winner of the GSAC West Division to see where they travel to for the GSAC Championship Series. The best-of-three series is set for the first weekend of May.
