Spirit Win First Postseason Game at GSAC Championship Series

FULLERTON, CALIF. – The OUAZ softball program made its first postseason experience on Tuesday afternoon, splitting the first two games of the GSAC Championship series with West division champion (8)Hope International. The Spirit picked up its first-ever postseason win in Game 1 before falling in extra innings in Game 2.

OUAZ 1, (8)Hope International 0
Game 1 saw a pitcher's duel, as the GSAC Pitcher of the Year Allie Puente of Hope and the Spirit's All-Conference hurler Alexandra McCutcheon kept the game even at zero through six innings. OUAZ finally broke through in the seventh frame, and McCutcheon was able to get the final three outs for her team.

Heliana Bueno led off the seventh with a single, and Megan Chambers came into run. Chambers advanced to third following a pair of sacrifice bunts, and scored thanks to a Briana Tucker single.

The Spirit had three hits in Game 1, tying the fewest amount of hits in a win for OUAZ. Heliana Bueno had two of those hits, with Tucker's game-winning single being the other.

McCutcheon allowed only five hits through the seven innings, and struck out seven on the way to her sixth win. McCutcheon has now recorded two consecutive complete-game shutouts, and has pitched 15 consecutive scoreless in games that she has started.

(8)Hope International 6, OUAZ 5 (10 innings)
OUAZ continued its momentum from the Game 1 win, scoring five runs in the first two innings of Game 2. Bueno singled home two runs to get the scoring started in the first, and Tucker had her second RBI single of the day to give the Spirit a 3-0 lead.

The Spirit added another pair of runs in the second inning, with Beltran and Bueno giving the Spirit a 5-1 lead. After taking the four run advantage after two frames, the Spirit did not score again and had just three hits in the final eight innings.

The Royals slowly chipped away at the Spirit lead, and used a pair of home runs in the fifth to tie the game. Despite great opportunities for both teams in extra innings, the winning run did not come across until the 10th inning, where a single gave the Royals the advantage they needed to tie the championship series.

Bueno finished Game 2 with three of the Spirit's five RBI, and was one of six players to record a hit for OUAZ. Phoebe Popplewell had a solid start, striking out four and allowing just two earned runs in her first postseason appearance.

The winner-take-all Game 3 will take place at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton tomorrow afternoon, with the victorious team earning the GSAC's automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship. First pitch is scheduled for Noon PST.
