Baseball Splits to Keep Postseason Hopes Alive

SURPRISE, Ariz. – On the final day of the regular season the OUAZ baseball team split a doubleheader with Arizona Christian to keep a postseason berth within reach. OUAZ would drop the first game on Saturday 12-5 before coming back to win the nightcap 4-1.

The Spirit ends the regular season with a 20-21 overall record. They finished 9-7 in GSAC games and currently hold a one-game lead for Arizona Christian (31-20, 6-6 GSAC) with the Firestorm having to play a series at The Master's next weekend.

The first game on Saturday was a back-and-forth affair early with the Spirit scoring three in the bottom of the first before ACU came back to open a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the fifth. OUAZ had its best chance to take the lead back in the bottom of the sixth with three consecutive one-out singles, but a double play ended the inning, and the Firestorm would use the momentum to pull away late.

Ben Lewis had four hits in the game, including a pair of doubles. Adrian Salazar added three hits with a double and two RBI. Tristan Thomas also had three hits and a double of his own with two runs scored.

The second game was a pitcher's duel with neither team breaking through until the fourth inning. It was the Spirit that took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth without getting a hit. With Elijah Celaya at second, Nathan Tarver reached on a strikeout wild pitch and the throw to first was wild and Celaya scored from second.

Thomas delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Spirit a 2-0 lead. ACU would get their only run of the game in the sixth inning by taking advantage of an error and a wild pitch before starting a run at third.

Deon Reese would deliver the deciding blow in the bottom of the sixth as he tripled down the left-field line to drive in the Spirit's final two runs.

Anthony Quattrocchi (7-1) was solid again with another complete game for his seventh consecutive decision won. He retired the first 11 batters of the game and finished with just five hits allowed with eight strikeouts and zero walks.

Reese had two hits in the game to join Thomas and Jared Crockett with multi-hit games in the win.

OUAZ must now wait and watch what happens between ACU and The Master's next Friday and Saturday in California. The Spirit will win the East Division and clinch a spot in the GSAC Championship Series if TMU can win twice.
