OUAZ Swept to Start Season’s Final Series

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team came up empty on the first day of its final series of the regular season, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Arizona Christian at Surprise Stadium. OUAZ dropped the first game 13-4 and then came up short in the night cap 4-3.
 
The Spirit are now 19-20 overall this season and they still hold a one-game lead for Arizona Christian for the top spot in the GSAC East Division with an 8-6 record. OUAZ can clinch the division with two wins on Saturday.
 
In the opener, ACU recorded 21 hits and they scored in six of the nine innings. OUAZ had cut into a 4-0 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the third behind a two-run single from Nathan Tarver. Tristan Thomas homered in the bottom of the fourth for the final Spirit run.
 
Tanner Fallon (3-3) was tagged for eight runs in 3.1 innings. Myles White worked 0.2 scoreless and Kapono Rawlins went the final 1.1 allowing one hit and no runs.
 
The second game saw the Firestorm score all four of their runs in the top of the fourth inning. OUAZ got one back in the bottom of that inning and then two more in the bottom of the seventh before the rally was halted.
 
Gage Johnson (6-2) delivered another compete game for the Spirit allowing the four runs (three earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts.
 
Fernando Lugo had a pair of hits, including an RBI double in the seventh. Ben Lewis also had an RBI with a sacrifice in the seventh.
 
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. OUAZ will recognize its senior class in a ceremony around 2:40 p.m.
