Doubleheader Split Puts OUAZ Within One Win of GSAC East Crown

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The OUAZ softball team participated in the first ever games at the new Arizona Christian softball field, and while they lost the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, they got on step closer to the postseason with a win to close the afternoon. The Spirit's win in Game 4 of the GSAC East Championship Series gives them a 3-1 advantage over ACU, needing just one more win to clinch its spot in the GSAC Championship Series.

ACU 5, OUAZ 0
The Firestorm came out with energized bats at its new home park, scoring a pair of runs in the first and second innings. ACU added another run in the fifth on an RBI triple, but Phoebe Popplewell did record three hitless frames in the first game.

OUAZ was only able to get seven baserunners – five hits, a walk and an error. OUAZ nearly scored a run in the fourth, but pinch runner Colby Johnson was thrown out at home following an Avery Bohn single. Five different players got a hit for the Spirit.

OUAZ 3, ACU 2
The second game of the day also had a combined five runs, but this time OUAZ got into the run category. After falling behind 1-0 after two innings, the Spirit scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth to take a 3-1 lead.

While OUAZ had only four hits, they got on in other ways. The Spirit walked six times, were hit by three pitches and an error during a sacrifice bunt attempt that brought Heliana Bueno all the way home from first during the fifth inning.

Mashayla Beltran drove in the Spirit's first run in the back half of the doubleheader, singling home Andraya Rhinehart in the third. Rhinehart then gave OUAZ a run with her bat the next inning, tripling down the right field line to score Laurynn De Anda.

Alexandra McCutcheon has now made 14 consecutive appearances allowing one earned run or less, as just the Firestorm's run in the second inning was charged as earned. McCutcheon got into some trouble in the sixth, having runners on second and third with one out after a run had already came across. McCutcheon struck out the next two batters, and finished the day with seven total.

The Spirit need to win just one more in the series, and they will have a chance next Saturday when they host Game 5 and 6 at Willow Canyon High School. Even if the Spirit win Game 5 to clinch the division, the second game will be played afterward.
