Spirit Take Final Two in Fort Worth

After falling just short in game two yesterday, the OUAZ softball team responded with a pair of convincing victories on Saturday over Texas Wesleyan. The Spirit have now won seven of its last eight games.

OUAZ 5, Texas Wesleyan 1
Briana Tucker doubled to lead off the second inning, and eventually around to score on Laurynn De Anda's first RBI at OUAZ. Tucker would score again in the next inning, when Avery Bohn brought home three runs with a two-out triple.

The score remained at 4-0 until the Rams finally got one on the board in the bottom of the fifth, but OUAZ responded two innings later. Rachel Stockseth led off with a double, and a pair of sacrifice hits brought her around for insurance heading into the final three outs. The Spirit finished with four extra base hits, all doubles, from four different batters.

Phoebe Popplewell put together a great performance in the final game on Friday, but the team fell in extra innings. This time, Popplewell pitched even better, allowing just the one run on two hits, three walks and striking out seven. Alexandra McCutcheon came in and got the last outs, though did not earn a save.

OUAZ 9, Texas Wesleyan 6
A pitcher's duel was followed up with a lot of runs and sloppy defense. The teams combined for 19 hits and six errors in the series finale.

Bohn carried over her extra-base hitting from 30 minutes earlier, doubling home Tucker and Janessa Rivera for a 2-0 lead in the first. The Rams answered right back in the bottom half with a pair, but the Spirit were up to the task.

Mashayla Beltran singled home a run, then came to score on Tucker's two-RBI single in the second. OUAZ struck again in the top of the third, scoring a pair on an Andraya Rhinehart base hit.

The Spirit added single runs in the fifth and sixth, pushing its lead to 9-3. The Rams were able to put OUAZ on the ropes a bit with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth, but Alexandra McCutcheon came in to pick up her second save of the season.

OUAZ will return home to prepare for yet another road trip, this time to the Sooner state. The Spirit will play six games in three days in Oklahoma, starting with a doubleheader against Mid-America Christian on March 16.
