Spirit Swept on First Day in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY – The OUAZ softball team began its six games in three-day trip to Oklahoma with a pair of losses at Mid-American Christian on Tuesday afternoon. OUAZ was shutout 2-0 in the first game of the day before suffering a 5-4 loss in game two.
 
With the day's results, OUAZ is now 7-10 overall this season as they were swept in a doubleheader for the first time since February 1.
 
In the first game, Mid-American Christian (10-4) scored twice in the bottom of the second and those runs held up the rest of the game. The Spirit had a few chances to push runs across the plate, but went just 1 for 12 with runners on base and hitless in four chances with runners in scoring position.
 
Phoebe Popplewell (2-4) allowed the two runs (one earned) in 2.1 innings I the circle. Alexandra McCutcheon went the final 3.2 innings without allowing a run and recording six strikeouts.
 
Katelyn Chambers had two of the team's six hits while Heliana Bueno and Jada Cruz each had a double.
 
Game two saw MACU open a 4-0 lead through three innings before the Spirit began to chip away. Rachel Stockseth and Bueno had RBI hits I the fourth and fifth innings for the Spirit. After added a run in the bottom of the fifth, Charlene De Anda and Andraya Rhinehart drove in runs for the Spirit in the top of the sixth, but they were unable to add the tying run.
 
Rhinehart, Bueno, and Laurynn De Anda each had two hits in the game with Rhinehart and De Anda adding doubles.
 
McCutcheon (2-4) allowed one run in two innings to suffer the loss. Cori Turner gave up four runs (two earned) in 3.2 innings before Popplewell recorded the final out for the Spirit.
 
OUAZ continues its trip on Wednesday when they face Hastings at 11 a.m. (AZ) and Langston at 3 p.m. (AZ).
