Errors Burn Spirit in Bid for Upset

The OUAZ softball team looked to be one out away from defeating second-ranked Science and Arts College on Tuesday, when an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt kept the Drovers at just one out, and would covert two batters later for the walk-off 4-3 win on Thursday. With the loss, the Spirit finished its road trip to Oklahoma 0-3.

It seemed the Spirit were going to secure the second out in the bottom of the seventh when Shyla Clouse went for a sac bunt attempt, but the throw bounced out of Avery Bohn's glove and put runners on first and second. After a walk to load the bases and a pitching change, Alexandra McCutcheon gave up a two-RBI single on her third pitch that ended the afternoon.

Cori Turner pitched her best effort yet, giving up only one earned run and striking out six in 6.1 innings. She also walked only one batter, and posted three no-hit innings.

The Spirit started the scoring in the top of the first, when two runs came around to score after an error on a throw to first following a dropped third strike. The Drovers scored a single run in the second and third innings, and the game remained scoreless until the seventh.

OUAZ took the lead in the seventh when Kelly Stumper brought Rachel Stockseth around to score, after Stockseth doubled with two outs. Her double was only the team's second hit after the first inning, and the Spirit finished the afternoon with just four hits.

Mashayla Beltran had OUAZ's only other extra base hit, a double in the first that she scored on with the error. The Spirit had only six baserunners all game, as the team drew two walks as well.

The Spirit return home and start conference play next Friday when they host the first two games of a seven-game series. The winner of the seven-game set will face the winner of the GSAC West in the conference championship series.
