Game Recap: Softball |

Spirit Take First Two in GSAC East Championship Series

SURPRISE, ARIZ - The OUAZ softball team took a bumpy route to a Friday sweep, but the Spirit now lead the seven-game series 2-0 over Arizona Christian with a pair of home victories. OUAZ is now just two wins away from securing its spot in the GSAC Championship series.

OUAZ 12, Arizona Christian 11
Arizona Christian came out swinging, building a 8-2 lead through the third inning. After that point, the Spirit outscored the Firestorm 10-3 in the remaining four innings.
OUAZ got its offense going in the bottom of the fourth, plating four runs on four hits. Laurynn De Anda hit a two-run single to get her team going, and eventually came around on an error.

After falling behind 11-6 after the top of the sixth, OUAZ recorded five runs in the bottom half to tie the game. The Firestorm made three errors, and the Spirit made the most of its four hits to pull even heading into the final inning.

After a pair of singles to start the inning, pinch runner Samantha Miller made her way around to end the game on a wild pitch with one out. It was the only other inning other than the second that the Spirit scored without the Firestorm committing an error.

The Spirit got at least one hit from everyone in the starting lineup, led by Laurynn De Anda's 3-3 day. She hit a two-run home run for OUAZ's only runs in the first three innings, and finished with four RBIs. Andraya Rhinehart nearly matched the RBI total, driving in three and having a pair of hits.

Avery Bohn and Heliana Bueno each had two hits as well, and combined for three runs scored. Bueno recorded a double in the fourth and a sacrifice bunt.

OUAZ 10, Arizona Christian 2
The Spirit got the offense going a lot quicker in game two, posting a pair of runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Kelly Stumper brought home the game's first two runs with a two-out single up the middle.

Bueno brought home two with her single through the left side giving the Spirit a 4-0 lead. Mashayla Beltran joined the 2-RBI hit party when she doubled to center in the fourth to give OUAZ a six-run cushion.

Bueno ended the game for OUAZ when she hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning. It marked the first time ever the Spirit have run-ruled the Firestorm, and the first time OUAZ had accomplished that in 2021.

While the offense was going, Alexandra McCutcheon dealt her way to the 16th consecutive appearance with one earned run or less. She struck out seven and walked just one batter in the 6.0 innings pitched, scattering eight hits over that span.

The series now shifts over to Arizona Christian, where games three and four will be played on April 10. Game 3's first pitch from Dream City School is scheduled Noon.
