Fourth Quarter Miscues Hurt No. 16 Spirit in Season Opener

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Playing a game for the first time in 468 days, the 16th-ranked OUAZ football team saw its 28-7 halftime lead evaporate as No. 24 Arizona Christian rallied back for a 45-35 win on Saturday Afternoon at Spirit Field.
 
OUAZ (0-1, 0-1 SAC) led 35-14 heading into the fourth quarter before Arizona Christian (6-1, 3-0) outscored the Spirit 31-0 in the final quarter. The run started with a snap over the punter's head for a safety and then a 40-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
 
It looked different for the Spirit late in the third quarter when Shamar Moreland went 44 yards on a screen pass for his third touchdown of the game with 2:39 to play in the quarter. He opened the scoring with a 25-yard run on his first touch in over 17 months. Moreland also had a 36-yard run for a score in the second quarter.
 
OUAZ finished with 425 yards of offense, including 334 yards passing. They were only 5 of 15 on third down and committed 20 penalties for 178 yards. ACU ran for 254 yards and finished with 527 total yards of offense.
 
Moreland finished with 135 yards rushing on 21 carries and added 59 yards on two receptions. He also had 114 yards on kick returns for 308 all-purpose yards. Jordan Dixon ran for 10 yards and one touchdown.
 
Austin McCullough threw for 334 yards and completed passes to nine different receivers. Jeremiah Greylock led the team with eight catches for 97 yards.
 
Christian Viville recorded a pair of sacks and three tackles-for-loss as part of his nine-tackle game. David Sow made 10 tackles to lead the team. Rylen Kaniaupio and Jaylen Moore each had an interception.
 
OUAZ will look to bounce back next Saturday when they head to Goodwell, Oklahoma, to face Oklahoma Panhandle State at noon.
