Spirit Overcome Slow Start, Turnovers to Win at Panhandle State

GOODWELL, Okla. – On a day that saw cold, wind, and rain, the OUAZ football team battled through it all and more to earn a 35-28 win at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday afternoon at Carl Wooten Field at Anchor D Stadium.
 
Less than two minutes into the game OUAZ (1-1, 1-1 SAC) was down 14-0 after Panhandle State (1-7, 1-2) broke an 80-yard touchdown run and then returned a Spirit fumble for a touchdown. Shamar Moreland would have the game even at 14-14 by the end of the first quarter with a pair of rushing touchdowns.
 
After Marquez Johnson returned an interception 76 yards to give OPSU a 21-14 lead, Moreland took a screen from Austin McCullough 15 yards to tie the game right before halftime. Johnson returned another interception 55 yards for a score in the third quarter to put the Aggies in front 28-21 with their third defensive touchdown of the day.
 
OUAZ would answer just over two minutes later when Donald Stokes Jr. made a diving catch in the endzone for a 35-yard score to even the game at 28-28. Then in the fourth quarter, David Jones Jr. forced a fumble that OUAZ recovered. McCullough hit Marcus Williams for 40 yards n the next play and then Jordan Nixon scored from two yards out to put the Spirit ahead for the final time.
 
The Spirit finished the game with 573 yards of offense while setting school record with 107 plays and 32 first downs. They gained 263 yards rushing on a program record 53 attempts with 310 yards passing.
 
Moreland gained 199 yards rushing while making eight receptions for 64 yards with the three total touchdowns. Dixon had 71 yards rushing and Ian Zamudio totaled 74 yards receiving on six catches.
 
After allowing 88 yards to OPSU on their first drive, the Spirit defense gave up just 140 yards the rest of the game. The Aggies had just 74 yards passing to tie the OUAZ record for fewest passing yards allowed in a game.
 
Brandon Tomerlin Jr. led the Spirt with eight tackles (six solo) to go with one tackle-for-loss, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. Jones added six tackles (three solo), two tackles-for-loss, and three pass breakups to his sack and forced fumble.
 
Christian Foote became the first player in OUAZ history to record a sack and an interception in the same game. Seth Ham also had a sack and forced fumble and Travis Cutright sealed the win with an interception in the final minute.
 
The Spirit will now have a week off before hosting Wayland Baptist at Spirit Field on March 27 at 11 a.m.
