Game Recap: Softball |

Win Streak Gets to Five Before Ending During Doubleheader Split

The OUAZ softball team extended its win streak to five on Friday afternoon, before eventually losing in a doubleheader split with Texas Wesleyan. All five of the Spirit's wins so far have come in the state of Texas.

OUAZ 6, Texas Wesleyan 2

Texas Wesleyan led for most of the first game, but the Spirit bats came alive in the team's final six outs. After trailing most of the game, OUAZ scored five runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull out its fifth straight victory.

The first three batters reached for OUAZ, but Katelyn Chambers was throw out trying to advance home on Briana Tucker's sacrifice bunt attempt. Andraya Rhinehart hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Janessa Rivera, and Baylei Ozuna, who ran for Tucker, scored on Avery Bohn's double.

Three more insurance runs were added in the seventh for the Spirit, highlighted by Rhinehart's double down the right field line. Tucker and Bohn each had an RBI to push the lead to four.

Alexandra McCutcheon came in to capture her second save of the season, picking up right where Cori Turner left off. Turner allowed just one earned run and did not walk a batter for her most complete performance in an OUAZ uniform.

Texas Wesleyan 5, OUAZ 4 (8 innings)

Runs were at a premium in the second matchup Friday as the first score did not come across until the fifth inning. After reaching on a fielder's choice, breaking up a double play, Bohn came around to score on Kelly Stumper's infield single.

The Rams responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Spirit just three outs to stage a comeback. OUAZ used the opportunity to its advantage, Stumper singling home Bohn for the second time in three innings.

After stopping a Texas Wesleyan walk-off threat in the bottom of the seventh, the Spirit put themselves in a great position to win with a two-run eighth. Beltran started the inning at second, and scored after Tucker doubled down the right field line with two outs. Ozuna came into run for Tucker, and scored thanks to Rhinehart's single up the middle.

Texas Wesleyan tied the game quickly with two runs of its own, and won after a Rachel Stockseth error that would have pushed the game into another inning. Fielding mistakes have killed the Spirit, as the team has made at least one error in 12 straight games, and have seven multi-error games.

Phoebe Popplewell put together another solid game in the circle, allowing only two hits and two runs over 5.1 innings. Popplewell and McCutcheon combined for seven strikeouts, and only three earned runs.

The four game series wraps up Saturday with another doubleheader at Sycamore Park. First pitch of game one from Fort Worth, Texas is scheduled for Noon Arizona time.
