Johnson, Offense Combine to Earn Doubleheader Split

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The OUAZ baseball team split a doubleheader against Our Lady of the Lake on Friday, giving them an opportunity for a split on Saturday afternoon. After runs were hard to come by the previous evening, there were plenty of players crossing the plate in both games.

The Spirit jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning thanks to a Ben Lewis infield single. After that, the Saints retired nine consecutive OUAZ batters, and the Spirit managed only one hit for the remainder of the game.

Five pitchers made their way to the mound for OUAZ, and all gave up at least one earned run, except for Cole Tidd. The listed catcher struck out two and gave up a hit in his pitching debut, getting the final three outs of the sixth inning.

Jared Crockett extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single in the second inning. The streak would end in the second game, where he would finish 0-4, but did come around to score in OUAZ's five-run fifth inning.

After giving up four runs through two frames, Gage Johnson gave up only two more hits in the final five innings. The Spirit battled all the way back to set up the split on Saturday afternoon.

"Gritty performance from Gage," OUAZ head coach Tim Montez said. "He did not have his best stuff early, but he kept grinding and then found his second wind. Just a great job of competing."

Six different players drove in runs for OUAZ during the second game, highlighted by Alex Chacon's first career RBI. Elijah Celaya was the only Spirit member to score twice, marking the fourth time in the last five games he has had at least one run.

The final game of the series tomorrow is scheduled for Noon Arizona Time.
