Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Spirit Knock off First Ranked Opponent With Three Unanswered Goals

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - In the first meeting, OUAZ scored twice on The Master's in the first half, but the Mustangs fought its way back to a tie. On Thursday, it was the Spirit's turn to rally, and they did so in style.

After falling down 1-0 just ten minutes into the game, the Spirit scored three unanswered goals in 30 minutes, never looking back for a 3-1 victory over the 20th-ranked Mustangs. It is the first time OUAZ has defeated The Master's in program history, and the first win over a ranked program in the team's history.

Emily Lynch converted a penalty kick in the 18' to tie the game at one, and Sydnee Busby netted the go-ahead score 8:19 before halftime. It is the second time this season Lynch and Busby have scored in the same game.

Haley Chitwood added an insurance goal 2:46 into the second half thanks to a great pass from Cassidi Calzaretta. It was her first OUAZ goal, and would be the final goal for the remainder of the match.

It was a physical game early, as both teams combined for 11 fouls in the first half. The only yellow card issued was not to anybody on the field, but to the Mustangs' head coach Curtis Martin.

While the fouls went down in the second half, the shots went up. 11 of the game's 19 shot attempts were taken in the final 45 minutes, and Spirit goalkeeper Cassidy Samuelsson made two saves to secure her second collegiate win.

The Spirit have the remainder of the weekend to prep for its Tuesday matchup at Arizona Christian. Kickoff from Glendale, Ariz. is scheduled for 11 a.m. Arizona time.
