Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Howard's Long Range Snipe Secures OT Victory

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - The OUAZ women's soccer team may have clinched its berth into the GSAC Championship Game last week, but the Spirit are still looking to build its resume as the NAIA National Championship Tournament draws near. That effort nearly took a hit as the Spirit needed overtime to defeat rival Arizona Christian on Monday morning.

It looked like the Spirit would be off and running like they were in the series' previous meeting, as Emily Lynch scored 6:13 into the game. OUAZ had its opportunities throughout the rest of the first half, but the Firestorm found an equalizer in the 42'.

After a second half where the Spirit had the majority of the chances, the game needed extra time. OUAZ did not need a lot of time to end the golden goal situation, as Haley Howard picked the top left corner from about 40 yards out just 1:42 into the overtime frame.

It was an intense and physical game, as the teams combined for 22 fouls. The cautions were flying as well, with four yellow cards being handed out, three to the Firestorm.

The conference's save percentage leader Cassidy Samuelsson made seven key saves in her team's victory. She made six of them in the first half, preserving OUAZ's 1-0 lead as long as she could before allowing the goal in the 42'.

Three seniors were celebrated as well – Makaila Marsh, Teresa Vargas and Mackinzie Kienast. Each player saw over 30 minutes of action each, and Kienast recorded a shot on goal in the first half, nearly giving the Spirit a second goal just a minute after Lynch scored to open the game.

OUAZ will have one final regular season contest, hosting William Jessup on Thursday morning. Kickoff from Spirit Field is scheduled for 10 a.m.
