Game Recap: Baseball |

Spirit Take Second Straight Conference Series

WADDELL, ARIZ. - After giving up 14 or more runs for the second time this season against Arizona Christian, the OUAZ baseball team rebounded to win on Saturday night. The Spirit now sit three games ahead of the two other GSAC East teams.

Arizona Christian 16, OUAZ 6
Saturday's first game felt similar to another road loss to ACU earlier this season, as the Firestorm jumped out to a huge lead early on, just like on February 2. OUAZ found itself down 14-1 after three innings, a hole the team could not dig out of.

While OUAZ did not cut the deficit to under ten runs, the team did outscore ACU 5-2 after a disastrous first three innings. The team scored runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, gaining confidence for the series finale later that night.

Despite challenges to keep the game close, the Spirit did have 13 total hits. Brian Camacho and Adrian Salazar each had a pair, plus added an RBI each. Anastacio Salas and Daniel Partida each drove in a run as well.

OUAZ 4, Arizona Christian 3
The two teams looked off and running after combining for five runs in the first inning of game two, but both starting pitchers settled into the night. There was not another run scored between the second and fifth innings, before OUAZ added single scores in the sixth and seventh.

Salazar doubled to score Ben Lewis with one out, then Jordan Hollins eventually drove in Salazar for a two-out RBI. Hollins made it to second after an error, but was stranded when Deon Reese flew out to right field.

Starter Anthony Quattrocchi looked to be in trouble early, giving up three runs, highlighted by a two-run home run from Manny Villa. After a rocky first inning, Quattrocchi gave up just two more hits in the final six frames, striking out ten. He also put together three separate 1-2-3 innings, and did not walk a batter.

It looked like the Spirit were going to tie the game in the second inning, when Tristan Thomas hammered a ball into left center. The ball appeared to leave the ballpark in the air for a home run, but was ruled a ground-rule double instead. Thomas did not come around to score, and the Spirit trailed until the sixth inning.

There was no question whether Thomas' hit left the yard in the seventh, taking the first pitch of the inning and depositing it over the left-field fence to give his team a 4-3 lead. Quattrocchi struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win, the fifth consecutive strikeout of an ACU batter to finish the evening.

Hollins and Salazar had near-identical stat lines, as they each went 2-3 with a double and an RBI. Thomas was perfect at the player, falling a double shy of the cycle. The only other player to get a hit for OUAZ was Brian Camacho, who singled in the fifth.

The Spirit now hold a three game lead over both The Master's and Arizona Christian in the GSAC East standings. OUAZ will now play a pair of non-conference games next week before host the Mustangs on April 9 and 10.
